ROMANTIC INNS OF CALIFORNIA WINE COUNTRY

For many Californians, life is a love affair with Wine! Some of the finest Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel grapes are grown in the State and go toward producing magnificent wines in beautiful surroundings. Alongside the wine are excellent restaurants and superb hotels and country inns.

If you are travelling from South to North or the other way around there are two especially lovely areas which are famous for their viniculture.

Napa Valley and Sonoma

The constant remark of departing visitors is “Yes, it is expensive, but worth it!” Even if you are simply passing through, treat yourself to lunch on the terrace, overlooking the valley.

Santa Ynez Valley

Another fast growing area of wine production, featured in the Oscar Award winning movie “Sideways” is the Santa Ynez Valley in Southern California. The Santa Ynez Valley is located inland from Santa Barbara around the towns of Los Olivos, Solvang and Buelleton, and is fast establishing a reputation for outstanding wines.

The Ballard Inn

In the small town of Ballard, is The Ballard Inn, an upscale B & B with wonderfully decorated rooms and an excellent restaurant next door. The Wine List features many of the local Santa Barbara County Chardonnays, Sauvignon Blanc’s and of course Pinot Noir. You can also do the “Sideways” Wine Tour from here.

Alisal Guest Ranch

Just outside nearby Solvang is the Alisal Guest Ranch, which has two 18 Hole Golf courses, and features horseback riding and a variety of Western pursuits. Accommodation is in cottages, either as studios or two room suites. No TV’s or Telephones in the rooms!

Ojai Valley Inn and Spa

Finally, if you have the time try and stop in the lovely little town of Ojai, just 73 miles north of Los Angeles. The Ojai Valley Inn and Spa has a George Thomas designed golf course, Spa and many recreations for the non-golfer as well.
